Marienplatz in Munich
One of the most popular sights in Munich
Every year, Marienplatz in Munich enchants millions of tourists and locals. The popular square is located in the centre of the city and an important transport hub. Important buildings such as the Neues Rathaus, the Marian column or the Fischbrunnen are located right in the pedestrian district. In the near vicinity there are also numerous shopping possibilities, sights such as the Frauenkirche as well as culinary hot spots that you can discover.
The Neues Rathaus in Munich
The New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) is especially known for its Glockenspiel and the champion celebrations of the FC Bayern Munich. After the Old Town Hall got too small, in 1909 the New Town Hall was erected in the neo-Gothic style. The impressive building hosts the Munich city council and the mayor’s main office today. From the 80 metres high tower you can enjoy a marvellous view of the whole old town of Munich.
Probably the best-known sight at Marienplatz is the Glockenspiel at the New Town Hall. When the bells chime at 11 am, 12 pm or 9 pm*, all looks go up. 32 figurines and 42 bells in total mirror scenes from Munich’s city history on several levels. The top level shows the wedding of Duke Wilhelm V and Renate of Lorraine. To honour the just married couple, a joust was held at the Marienplatz where the Bavarian knight defeated his enemy from Lorraine. One level down, the Schäfflertanz (coopers’ dance) is shown. The coopers are said to have danced a joyful dance for the scared population after the heavy plague.
